A life-long naturalist, McGee is a native of Beersheba Springs, on the Cumberland Plateau in southeast Tennessee. He was always a student of nature and after college was a naturalist in the state park system. His academic background is all in the sciences. He taught high school Biology for eighteen years, with emphasis on Ecology, Botany, and Zoology. He and his Botay students prepared school herbariums.

His current work on copper is a natural evolution from his days of collecting plants for scientific research.

After his teaching career, he founded an international eco-trekking company, “Terra Treks.” While based in Tennessee, New Mexico, and the French Alps, he continued his guiding/teaching in “classrooms without walls.” His work comes to the art world via the sciences, first working in clay, and evolved into etching botanicals onto copper.
